Kemptville – Brian Purcell of James Purcell Insurance Broker Ltd. in Spencerville was presented with the Bill Thake Memorial Award for Economic Development Leadership at Friday’s Leeds Grenville Economic Development Summit.
Purcell has long been a trusted presence in Spencerville, offering insurance to families, farms, businesses, and recreational vehicles throughout the region. Beyond his business, he has dedicated decades to volunteer service in heritage, tourism, youth programs, and civic leadership.
He has played a key role in helping the Spencerville Mill Foundation maintain the historic mill as a vibrant community hub and heritage attraction. Brian has mentored youth through the Spencerville and District Optimist Club, supported public safety as a Captain with the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department, served nearly 30 years on the South Grenville OPP Detachment Board, and coached South Grenville Minor Hockey.
“It’s certainly a big honour to be recognized with this award,” said Purcell. “I do not feel I do anything special; I simply follow the example my parents set by being involved and active in my community. I am proud of what the Mill offers to the community and what the Optimist Club does for youth.”
“A part of economic development for any community includes volunteer organizations,” he added. “They provide activities and resources to residents and bring people into our communities regularly through various events. Visitors get to experience all the services our local businesses and attractions offer, and some may even choose to make our communities their home.”
“You have been doing this work for an incredible 30 years, and that is truly inspiring,” said Tim Nason, speaking on behalf of the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department.
Past President Julia Couture and Vice President Kandi Thompson of the Spencerville and District Optimist Club offered their congratulations, noting Brian’s dedication to supporting and mentoring youth.
“Brian has an easy-going and friendly demeanour which makes him a natural leader,” said Tim East, Chair of the Spencerville Mill Foundation. “His character and leadership have made our community a better place.”
Edwardsburgh Cardinal Mayor Tory Descamps added, “Brian, you are the perfect person for this award. Your committed approach to improving quality of life across South Grenville through your work with the fire department, minor hockey, the OPP detachment board, the Optimist Club, and the Spencerville Mill Foundation will have a lasting impact on the region.”
Introduced in 2011, the Bill Thake Memorial Award recognizes a volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and leadership contributing to the growth and vitality of the Leeds-Grenville economy. Brian Purcell becomes the 21st recipient of this prestigious honour.
This year’s Economic Development Summit also featured keynote addresses from the Hon. Nina Tangri, Associate Minister of Small Business, and Brock Dickinson of Stonebridge Solutions, LP, as well as presentations on the future of business in the region.
