Games to boost economy and sport tourism in Eastern Ontario

BROCKVILLE — The City of Brockville has been selected to host the 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games, bringing approximately 1,400 participants to the community over three days in mid-August 2027.
Announced on Friday by Ontario’s Minister of Sport at the Brockville YMCA, with provincial officials, community partners, and local representatives in attendance to mark the occasion.
The Games are expected to generate an estimated $1.5 million in economic impact for Brockville, driven by accommodations, dining, local attractions, and visitor spending.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Brockville to welcome participants and visitors from across Ontario,” said Matt Wren, Mayor of Brockville. “Hosting the 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games will bring meaningful economic impact while showcasing our community as a vibrant and welcoming destination. We look forward to highlighting our local businesses, waterfront, and strong sense of community.”
Hosting the Games supports Brockville’s ongoing efforts to grow its event portfolio and strengthen its position as a destination for sport tourism and large-scale events.
“Sport tourism is a major economic driver for the province and a key part of our plan to protect Ontario’s economy,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport. “These Games will bring participants together in a celebration of physical activity, competition, and healthy living, while delivering meaningful economic benefits and a lasting legacy for the Brockville community.”
The total estimated cost to host the Games is $345,000, supported through a combination of funding sources, including a $325,000 Ontario Ministry of Sport Hosting Grant, participant registration fees, and sponsorship opportunities. The provincial grant includes funding for event delivery, as well as capital and legacy components.
“The Ontario 55+ Summer Games present an exciting opportunity for Brockville,” said Kelly Brintnell, Tourism Advisor for the City of Brockville. “In addition to participating in the Games, visitors will explore our community, support local businesses, and experience everything Brockville has to offer. Events like this help build momentum for future tourism and economic development opportunities.”
In addition to financial support, the City will contribute in-kind resources such as staff time and access to municipal facilities and venues.
“Sports are an important part of Brockville’s past and present, and I’m thrilled that our government is investing $325,000 to support the city in hosting the 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games. Bringing more than 1,000 participants to our community is an incredible opportunity to showcase everything our beautiful region has to offer. This will give a tremendous boost to our tourism economy next summer and for years to come,” said Steve Clark MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.
Hosting the 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games aligns with the City’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.
The 2027 Ontario 55+ Summer Games will see more than 1,000 athletes and participants from across the province competing in up to 17 sports and activities, including pickleball, slo-pitch and tennis. The province’s investment will help ensure the City of Brockville and the Games Organizing Committee’s successful implementation and delivery of these Games.
Held every two years, the Ontario 55+ Summer Games is the province’s premier summer sporting event for older adults, and is delivered by the Ministry of Sport in partnership with the Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA).
The Ministry of Sport leads a competitive bidding process to select a host municipality for each of the five provincial multi-sport Games, including the Ontario Summer and Winter Games (for youth), the Ontario 55+ Summer and Winter Games and the Ontario Parasport Games.
