Brockville – Student Parliament members from Athens District High School (ADHS) spent a full day at Queen’s Park in Toronto on May 11, gaining firsthand insight into Ontario’s political system, the daily operations of provincial government, and engaging directly with provincial leaders.
The trip was initiated after Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark visited ADHS on February 25, where he presented a new tricorne hat to the school’s Model Parliament.
Students had the opportunity to meet with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who greeted each student individually, posed for a group photo, and participated in a question-and-answer session. During the discussion, ADHS Leader of the Opposition Lucas Simmons questioned the Premier about environmental concerns surrounding the construction of a proposed highway project. Another student parliament member, Kayla Bolton, asked Ford why he decided to pursue a career in politics.
Following the meeting, students visited MPP Clark’s office, toured the historic building, and gained insight into voting and legislative procedures.
“I really enjoyed seeing the building and architecture,” said Grade 10 student Kaylee Mitchell.

To wrap up the day, the group attended caucus proceedings, where they received an official introduction and standing ovation from Members of Provincial Parliament.
Grade 11 student Katherine Pattemore said the trip made her proud to be part of the longest running student parliament in Canada.
“While observing the caucus meeting, there was a tense period where we waited for the vote, showing how much was riding on the final outcome,” Pattemore said. “This was an amazing experience that enriched us in provincial history.”
The visit highlighted the importance of student voice and civic engagement, giving students a unique opportunity to witness Ontario’s democratic process firsthand.
