Brockville Museum seeks loans for an exhibit on nursing education at St. Lawrence College

Brockville – The Brockville Museum needs the community’s help to put together an exhibit on the 50-year history of nursing education at St. Lawrence College (Brockville campus). The exhibit will run May 5-September 29, 2023 at the Brockville Museum, complimenting St. Lawrence College’s celebration of 50 years of nursing education at the Brockville campus taking place this May.

The museum’s exhibit will trace the history of nursing education in Brockville back to the first local nursing graduate in 1893 from Brockville General Hospital’s school of nursing, culminating with the role St. Lawrence College plays in training today’s nursing professionals. The museum’s existing collection includes a considerable assortment of objects representing nursing education in Brockville before 1973 but lacks material from the last 50 years when training nurses became the responsibility of Ontario Colleges. To help tell this more recent history, the museum is putting out the call for loans of small items related to nursing education at Brockville’s St. Lawrence College campus for the purposes of this temporary exhibit.

For an item to be considered for the exhibit, it should be dropped off at the museum between April 11 and 14 between 10 am and 4 pm along with detailed paperwork (available on the museum’s website). Lenders must provide a max. 400-word description of the object describing its relevance to nursing education at Brockville’s St. Lawrence College campus. Due to space limitations, objects cannot be larger than one cubic foot. Additional terms, along with a loan form, are available on the museum’s website.

“We’re excited to share a story that connects with so many local families and to celebrate this part of Brockville’s history alongside the College,” says Museum Curator/Director, Natalie Wood. “But we need help filling out the story, making sure that these past 50 years are equally represented alongside older objects” adds Wood.
