Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT) Hosting Plant Sale at Glen Elbe May 27th

Glen Elbe – Welcome to Glen Elbe, a historic landmark and a natural history site. Once a place of industry with mills, distillery, tannery, and cheese factory to now a tranquil setting with waterfalls and nature trails.

The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT) will be hosting a Plant Sale on May 27th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Glen Elbe, 870 County Road 42 near Athens.

TIWLT has been working diligently in preserving the homestead associated with the site. In the early days also situated on this land was a thriving farm, stagecoach stop and post office. Today the Georgian house (1839) and barn (1850) is almost complete.

It is to become a meeting place for the community to be involved in nature, horticulture, art and history.

The volunteers at Glen Elbe are currently resurrecting and restoring a Victorian Flower Garden adjacent to the house along with a mid-19th-century Vegetable Garden. Both gardens have all the heirloom plants of the period. The large patch of lupins is a must to be seen!

The land trust is interested in establishing in the area native trees and shrubs from the Carolinian Zone, that is, such plants as Tulip Tree, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Sycamore and more.

An arboretum has been established over the past two years and the trees are doing very well. To this end, three greenhouses have been built for the propagation of trees, shrubs and native perennials and overwintering nursery stock.

The more interesting one is the passive solar and geothermal greenhouse for winter propagation which is almost completed.

We invite you to visit the site, particularly on May 27th for our Plant Sale.

We are offering 30 Cultivars of Heirloom Tomatoes -individually potted so one can select and combine cultivars to suit your garden. There will be a vast variety of native trees, shrubs and native perennials.

Come out and enjoy the day on May 27th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for the TIWLT Plant Sale and tour the grounds.

All proceeds go toward the preservation of sites under the Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT).
