Runciman Launching his Memoir ‘From Mad Dog to Senator’ Friday

Brockville – Retired Senator and longtime MPP Bob Runciman will launch a memoir, From Mad Dog to Senator, of his 45 years in political office in the place where it all began, his hometown of Brockville, Ontario, this Friday, June 30.

The event, open to the public, will be held in the Royal Brock Grand Hallway, 100 Stewart Boulevard, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature brief comments from Runciman followed by a book signing.

Runciman served at all three levels of government beginning in 1972 as a member of Brockville city council. During his 29 years in the Ontario Legislature, he held six cabinet posts under three different premiers. He was the Interim Leader of the Ontario PC Party and held the position of Leader of the Official Opposition for more than two years. He concluded his career in the Canadian Senate where he chaired two standing committees and had three of his bills, including the so-called Border Boating Bill, become Canadian law.

The memoir, which has a five-star rating on Goodreads, details behind-the-scenes and looks at government and political processes, personal and family challenges, political issues and controversies he experienced and dealt with and the many individuals, both in and out of politics, who crossed his path.

Some of the issues and personalities:

  • Stephen Harper and Pierre Poilievre
  • The Mike Duffy downfall
  • The other side of Ontario Premier Bill Davis
  • The inmate breakout from Canada’s first “boot camp” for young offenders
  • Movie star Michael Douglas’s evening with Jeannette Runciman
  • The Belinda Stronach “attractive dipstick” controversy
  • His resignation as Solicitor General over an alleged breach of the Young Offenders Act
  • His groundbreaking initiative to effectively deal with criminal offenders suffering from mental illness and the federal refusal to follow Ontario’s lead.
