South Grenville – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has received $28 million from the Ministry of Education to build a new school that will serve families in Prescott and areas of Augusta and Edwardsburg-Cardinal.
The new school will replace Wellington Elementary School and Maynard Public School to create one school, with additional childcare spaces.
Once complete, the Kindergarten to Grade 6 school will have space for 435 students and 127 licensed childcare spaces, which is an additional 49 spaces to what is currently available between the two schools.
“The is an exciting project for the UCDSB. There has been an incredible amount of collaboration between the municipalities, mayors, and many levels of government. This is truly a team effort, and we are thankful to MPP Steve Clark for continuing to make this new school a priority, and for Minister Calandra for seeing our vision and approving the funding,” said UCDSB Chief Executive Officer Ron Ferguson. “This new space will give our students, and generations of students to come, a dynamic space to learn and grow.”
This new school will be a bright and modern single-story facility, with a large learning commons area, a double gym and ample outdoor space. The layout of the school will be based on the same design used for Bridgewood Public School in Cornwall (2016), Kemptville Public School (2017), and Swift Waters Elementary School in Brockville (2024).
“I was pleased to advocate for this project after the councils of the Township of Augusta and the Town of Prescott identified a new school as a community priority. This is an investment by our government in the future of our children, and it is great news for students, families, and educators in these growing communities,” said MPP Clark. “We’re creating modern learning spaces where students can be inspired and challenged to reach their full potential.”
The new build and consolidation of these two schools fulfills the 2017 decision and direction, made by the UCDSB Board of Trustees after an extensive Board-wide pupil accommodation review, to close Maynard PS and consolidate it with Wellington ES, pending Ministry approval for an addition or rebuild of Wellington ES.
“This project has been on the horizon for a while, and we are ecstatic that all the pieces are coming together and we are able to move forward. This is excellent news for our families that will be served by the brand-new school,” says Chair of the Board Jamie Schoular.
Pending approval from the Ministry of Education and conditional land requirements that need to be met, the planned location of the new school will be near the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre in Prescott, on land that is currently owned by Augusta Township. The projected opening date for the school is September 2030, with construction projected to start in March 2028.
