Augusta Fire & Rescue Responded to Structure Fire on County Road 21 on Wednesday

Augusta Twps. – on Wednesday at 12:49 p.m., Augusta Fire Rescue was dispatched to reports of a structure fire on County Road 21 in the Roebuck area. The Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department also responded under the existing Fire Service Agreement between the two municipalities.

The first fire apparatus arrived on scene at 1:03 p.m. and reported heavy flames involving a significant portion of the attic and the second floor.

Due to the high temperatures and humidity, mutual aid was requested from the Prescott Fire Department and Elizabethtown-Kitley Fire Department to provide additional personnel. This ensured firefighters could rotate through the incident, remain properly hydrated, and take necessary cooling breaks while safely combating the fire.

In total, 37 firefighters and 17 emergency vehicles responded to the incident.
Unfortunately, the home and its contents were a total loss. All occupants safely evacuated the residence, and there were no civilian injuries. One firefighter was assessed, treated, and released at the scene by Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service after experiencing a heat-related illness.

Tragically, the family’s cats perished in the fire. In addition, several family dogs remain unaccounted for at this time, and it is hoped they may still be found safe.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Augusta Fire Rescue would like to thank all the agencies that assisted with this incident, including the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department, Prescott Fire Department, Elizabethtown-Kitley Fire Department, Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service, Ontario Provincial Police, Hydro One, Augusta Public Works, and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Public Works Department. Their assistance, professionalism, and cooperation were greatly appreciated.

Our thoughts are with the family as they cope with the devastating loss.
