Brockville – Michael Barrett, Member of Parliament for Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands—Rideau Lakes, seconded MP Raquel Dancho’s Conservative Private Member’s Bill C-263 The Silver Alert National Framework Act at second reading in the House of Commons:
“Protecting vulnerable seniors should be a priority and I’m pleased to support my colleague MP Raquel Dancho’s bill to establish a National Silver Alert framework, so that when a vulnerable senior disappears the public can be alerted quickly, and communities can help bring them home safely,” said MP Barrett.
“Every minute matters when a vulnerable senior goes missing,” said MP Dancho. “This bill is about ensuring that when time is critical, Canadians have the tools and awareness needed to help bring loved ones home safely.”
MP Dancho brought forward Bill C-263, The Silver Alert National Framework Act, which would require the federal government to work with provinces, territories, and law enforcement to establish a national framework for issuing timely alerts to the public when vulnerable adults go missing.
A Silver Alert would be similar to an Amber Alert, with the public emergency notification issued in a specific geographic area when a vulnerable person goes missing and is believed to be at risk, typically someone living with dementia or another cognitive impairment, so communities can help locate the missing person.
Bill C-263 was informed by the tragic disappearance of Earl Moberg, an 81-year-old Winnipeg senior living with dementia who went missing in December 2023 and was never found. Following his disappearance, the Moberg family launched a petition, sponsored by MP Dancho, calling for a national Silver Alert system. The petition gathered more than 7,300 signatures from Canadians across the country, demonstrating strong public support for action.
“What we need is for the federal government to act with the tools that exists to coordinate on this life saving measure that can have a real impact on families across our country,” added MP Barrett.
