Brockville – On Tuesday night, at the final council meeting of 2024, Brockville city council approved replacing the 13 metal cabinets in the Railway Tunnel. These cabinets house the electronic equipment that controls the tunnel’s lighting and music.

“It makes good sense to take advantage of the time the tunnel is closed over the winter to get this work done, if possible.” “I think we are in a financial position, we can consider moving forward with this,” said Brockville Mayor Matt Wren

The decision will allow work to be completed over the winter months in the Brockville Railway Tunnel to replace all 13 cabinets. The original cabinets were not designed to sufficiently protect the equipment from the dampness and dripping water that exists in the Tunnel.

As such, corrosion and ongoing equipment failure has occurred. They will be replaced with specially designed and sealed cabinets, NEMA 4X waterproof to address the shortcomings of the original installation.

The replacement is being funded as a Special Capital Project out of surpluses generated by operational efficiencies and careful fiscal management said the Mayor.

“Moving forward with this project now will help ensure the Tunnel is in optimal condition for spring opening and the 2025 Tall Ships Festival,” said Mayor Wren
