Spencerville – There is something special about the South Nation River in the spring. As the water begins to flow a little faster and the trees and wildlife begin to wake, paddlers return to a long-standing local tradition that has brought the community together for more than two decades.

The Spencerville Mill & Museum’s annual Canoe Poker Run is taking place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, first launched in 2004, continues to welcome families, friends, and outdoor enthusiasts for a morning on the water in support of the Spencerville Mill Foundation.

After a brief pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has regained strong momentum, drawing over 200 paddlers in 2024 and approximately 160 in 2025. With canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards gliding along the river, the event offers a relaxed and inclusive way to enjoy the outdoors. All non-motorized watercraft are welcome, making it accessible to participants of all experience levels.

Beyond the paddle itself, the event plays an important role in supporting the Spencerville Mill Foundation and its ongoing efforts to preserve the historic 1860s grist mill. Funds raised help cover essential maintenance and operating costs, ensuring the Mill remains a vibrant and accessible space for the community to gather, learn, and celebrate local history.

The morning blends recreation with a touch of friendly competition. Along the route, paddlers collect cards as part of the poker run, with cash prizes totaling $500 awarded for the best hands. To be eligible, participants must complete the route and return to Spencerville Mill Park by 12:30 p.m., where a complimentary lunch will be served, generously provided by the Spencerville and District Optimist Club.

For those without access to a vessel, a limited number are available through a partnership with the Grenville Fish and Game Club.

Participants are encouraged to reserve in advance by contacting Brian at 613-340-2552.

Registration is $35 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Participants can register online at:

The Spencerville Mill Foundation gratefully acknowledges the support of South Nation Conservation in helping make this event possible.

At its heart, the Canoe Poker Run is about more than the cards or the prizes—it’s about time on the river, shared experiences, and supporting a place that continues to hold meaning for so many in the community.
